The national moratorium on evictions came to an end Saturday, after President Joe Biden s administration extended the original date by a month.
The administration announced Thursday it would allow the nationwide ban on evictions to expire, arguing that its hands are tied after the Supreme Court signaled the moratorium would only be extended until the end of the month.
That means renters behind on their payments will be at risk for losing their homes. On average, 22.5% of renters in Northeast Louisiana are behind on their payments.
The moratorium was put in place last September by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Walter McClatchey, a senior attorney with the Acadiana Legal Service Corporation, said the moratorium did not put a complete stop on evictions, but the end of the moratorium will make it easier for landlords to evict their tenants who are behind on payments.
