May s election will only be the second time voters in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have gone to the polls to elect their mayor. The BBC has been looking at what the role entails and how it came into being in 2017.
Why does Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have a mayor?
Mayors exist at local authorities up and down the country.
Some, such as in Bedford, are elected and work as the leaders of councils. Many are ceremonial and have no administrative power, instead acting as a figurehead for the area they represent.

The Ely Litter Pickers group received 24 pickers and bin hoops from McDonald s based in Ely Leisure Village as part of their bid to clean up East Cambridgeshire.

A litter picking group has received help from McDonald s in its ongoing mission to clean up East Cambridgeshire.
Ely Litter Pickers has received 24 new pickers and bin hoops from the restaurant, based in the city’s leisure village, which will be loaned out to anyone who wants to volunteer for the group.
The fast food chain has now donated £600 of litter-picking equipment for volunteers to use in places including Ely, Littleport, Mepal and Little Downham.

The East Cambs Community Safety Partnership is clamping down on graffiti following a spate of offensive incidents in Ely within the last four months.

A collaboration between East Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire Constabulary has begun a crackdown on offensive graffiti.
The collaboration, named The East Cambs Community Safety Partnership, is clamping down following a spate of incidents in Ely with the last four months.
They are appealing for anyone with information including any video evidence which could have been picked up by doorstep footage between December to April to come forward.

Next month s elections will be the first to take place since the coronavirus pandemic hit, and this is how they will work. (Image from May 2017 elections).
Voters across Cambridgeshire will be heading to the polls on May 6 to elect a Mayor for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority and the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner.
They will also be voting for their councillor at Cambridgeshire County Council, and in some areas there will also be by-elections for city, town and parish councils.
