Horse riders and cycling groups wanted a Pegasus crossing to the western arm of the roundabout – which would have given horse riders some control over it. The type of crossing was named after Pegasus, the mythical winged horse.
But a special study undertaken by the county council following last November’s highways committee came down firmly in favour of a Toucan crossing on the eastern arm, towards the BP roundabout.

Cllr Bailey said if they had gone ahead with the Pegasus crossing it would have been more expensive but crucially the lack of equine infrastructure such as bridleways would have made it unlawful.

An £800,000 improvement scheme for the Lancaster Way roundabout on the A142 near Ely begins on February 1.
The project was delayed slightly after requests from the public to improve the layout for pedestrians and cyclists as well as motorists.
Feedback resulted in the plans being changed to include a Toucan Crossing on the eastern arm of the roundabout to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CAPCA) that is part financing the scheme says the new signal-controlled crossing will improve continuity of the existing pedestrian and cycle route, connecting to shared-use paths.

The leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council is urging residents to “think very carefully about their actions” during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Councillor Anna Bailey has made a video statement encouraging residents to continue following Government guidelines to “make the biggest impact”.
“We must not be complacent,” she said.
“The number of infections may seem like they are decreasing, but we are so far away from the minimal figures the district once had during the spring and summer of 2020.

Residents have until February 1 to share their views on East Cambridgeshire District Council’s proposed plans for a £6.5m crematorium at the site of what was previously Mepal Outdoor Centre.
The proposed plans include a main chapel and a small side chapel, an electric cremator, natural burial plots, a modular function building for natural burials.
It also includes a pet cemetery located away from the other facilities and one acre of new planting, 57 new trees and 40 fruit trees.

Freedom of Information requests from Bankrate UK revealed East Cambridgeshire is home to the UK’s noisiest neighbours.

East Cambridgeshire has been officially named the home of the noisiest neighbours, with thousands of complaints relating to music, DIY and dogs barking.
A Freedom of Information (FOI) request by Bankrate UK revealed the councils across the county that have received the most complaints, with east Cambs winning first place.
The FOI exposed 4,999 complaints to East Cambridgeshire District Council since November 2017, that’s one in 17 residents lodging a grievance.
A spokesperson for Bankrate UK said: “Everybody needs good neighbours… but they don’t always get them.
