Man convicted of attempted murder for screwdriver stabbing in San Ysidro

CHULA VISTA    A man who stabbed another man with a screwdriver last year during a San Ysidro street robbery, seriously injuring the victim, was convicted Wednesday of attempted murder, robbery and vandalism charges. Eduardo Hernandez Oliveros, 23, faces nearly 25 years in prison when he is sentenced for the stabbing and robbery that occurred last Sept. 17 on East San Ysidro Boulevard near Border Village Road. Police said the victim was using his cellphone just before 7:30 a.m. when Oliveros confronted him on the street and asked to use the phone. Before the victim could react, Oliveros snatched the phone out of his hand and took off, police said.

2 Dozen Migrants Crossed Border Through Culvert Where 1 Died Amid Rains, USBP Says

Border Patrol agents were first called to the area just east of East San Ysidro Boulevard and Rail Court, at around 3:30 p.m., according to Supervisory Agent Jeff Stephenson. An agent went to the culvert, which was blocked by trash and debris, and heard people calling for help from inside, Stephenson said. The agent opened the grate and water began rushing out along with two men, USBP said. Multiple agencies, including San Diego Fire-Rescue, worked to search the interior of the culvert for others in need of rescue. In all, 10 migrants from Mexico were discovered, two of which were unresponsive, according to Border Patrol.

1 Dead, Several Injured Following Water Rescue in San Ysidro

The culvert has grates inside to stop people and debris from passing through. The agent opened the grate and saw one person who appeared to be dead and another who needed to be helped out of the water. Border Patrol agents called the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department to assist with the rescue around 4:11 p.m. When SDFD crews arrived at least eight people were found needing medical attention. One person was pronounced dead when crews arrived, according to SDFD Battalion Chief Robert Allen. Three of the seven who survived were transported to a local hospital, according to SDFD. Allen said all of the patients involved were in the U.S. illegally.

One killed, six others injured in border-area flooding -

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – One person was killed and a half-dozen others were injured Friday afternoon when a group of people became trapped in storm floodwaters just north of the U.S.-Mexico border. The deadly emergency in the area of East San Ysidro Boulevard and Rail Court was reported shortly after 4 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department. Rescue crews pulled seven people from the storm-driven flows, the city agency reported. One of the victims did not survive, according to SDFRD public affairs. Medics treated the rest of the group for minor injuries at the scene, then took three of them to a hospital for further care and evaluation, officials said.
