We must all love one another | News, Sports, Jobs

To the editor: I am writing in response to the letter “Questions about moving on” that appeared on Jan. 10. As I read it, I was outraged. I was shocked that someone could write to the newspaper and say whatever was on their mind. But I remembered, we the people of the United States have the right to freedom of speech, the Constitution guarantees that right and everyone is entitled to believe how they choose. After rereading the letter, I have a response. First, I am a Black woman who happens to be from one of the 70 percent fatherless Black homes that was referenced. I will not check to see where the writer got his statistics. I will not take the time to research other ethnic groups and see who is where on the list. Let’s just be fair and humble and say every race has that.

Jefferson County commissioners weigh Smithfield sewer options | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff writer STEUBENVILLE The Jefferson County Commissioners again had a discussion about the Smithfield sewer system and the Environmental Protection Agency’s concerns with plans to upgrade the plant. The topic has been a recurring matter of discussion as the county reviews options for the troubled system. The county, which has taken over the water system in Smithfield, is operating the sewer system but does not own the plant, which currently is owned by Smithfield Township. Hindering the start of a complete takeover and more than $3 million project to revamp the system are what the commissioners and water and sewer Director Michael Eroshevich say is a moving goal post from the EPA on ammonia levels.
