Are we all Fauxmerican? © ANGELA WEISS Why our interest in American politics may be superseding engagement in our own.
Today, I’ll be livestreaming the presidential inauguration of Joe Biden. Probably with a glass of wine and some popcorn. Last week, I had the impeachment hearings in congress playing live in the background at the end of my working day and the week before, I stayed up late binge-watching the extraordinary events at the Capital building in Washington as they unfurled. America is my favourite reality show.
Back in November, I spent nearly seven full days in a dry-eyed mania watching CNN tally up the electoral colleges as though my life depended on it. I got cramp in my hands refreshing my phone. I started to know all the US news anchors by name, even the guys whose job it was to point at maps and repeat inane platitudes about counting (hi John King). I began shouting ‘Has Nevada confirmed??’ in my fretful sleeping hours.
Veteran national journalist explores the political opportunities and risks for the new administration
WASHINGTON – The battle cry “Go Big, Joe! Go Big!” echoed among Democrats after their underdog candidates scored stunning upset victories in Georgia, picking up two vital senate seats earlier this month. And with his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan, President Joe Biden has indeed decided to “Go Big.”
But understand: “Going Big” is a gamble.
But given the cancerous lesions that polarize and vex this country, and the unbowed hostility of congressional Trumpers, “Going Big” is a high stakes presidential gamble that requires the new president to court Congress and activate the re-emergence of the bipartisan political center, once the essential component for major compromise legislation, but sadly all but obliterated by the tribal partisan warfare of the past 20 years.

Twitter’s recent wave of mass suspensions hurt Republicans while the vast majority of Democrats gained followers, an analysis of the data showed.
Out of all 45 Democrats in the Senate, only two lost followers in January while the rest gained thousands. The majority of Republicans, however, lost followers during the same period, according to data from the social media analytics website SocialBlade. The discrepancy was first reported by the New York Post.
Overall, 68% of Republican Senators lost followers in January compared to 0.04% of Democratic Senators. Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham lost the most followers out of the group, dropping 117,569 followers in January. Other Republican Senators lost tens of thousands of followers, including Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, who lost 56,237 followers; Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who lost 85,818 followers; and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who lost 77,238 followers.
