The United States Congress has passed a bill that includes largely restoring Sudan’s legal immunity, days after the country was formally removed from the US list of states sponsoring terrorism (SST).
However, the legislation, passed on Monday, does include an exemption that allows lawsuits filed by the families of victims of the September 11 attacks already under way in US courts to move forward.
The state sponsor of terrorism designation, which was in place for almost three decades, had weighed on Sudan’s economy and restricted its ability to receive aid. For investors, the reinstating of sovereign immunity removes another layer of financial risk.

WHEELING West Virginia Northern Community College has received a nearly $190,000 Opioid-Impacted Family Support Program grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration.
This grant-funded program will expand access to behavioral health services for families impacted by opioids and other substance use disorders. HRSA awarded 28 organizations nearly $12.5 million across the United States. WVNCC was the only organization in West Virginia awarded a grant.
The grant provides stipends and tuition assistance for students enrolled in one of two new programs at WVNCC.
With the grant, the school aims to increase training opportunities for behavioral health paraprofessionals working with families and to provide tuition assistance for participants. Northern will use grant funds, in part, to create two new academic programs focused on substance abuse: Substance Abuse Intervention Specialist and Substance Abuse Intervention Technician. COVID-19 UPDATE FOR WHITECOURT
Mandatory, province-wide restrictions announced by the Government of Alberta on December 8 have been put into effect to protect the health system and slow the spread of COVID-19.
These mandatory restrictions will in place at least until January 12, 2021. Health officials are monitoring the situation and will adjust measures if required. All Albertans, businesses, organizations and service providers must follow all new health measures.
Gathering Restrictions
Effective immediately,
all indoor and outdoor social gatherings – public and private – are prohibited. This does not apply to service visits from caregivers, health or childcare providers and co-parenting arrangements. Close contacts are limited to household members only. Individuals who live alone may have the same two non-household close contacts for the duration of this restriction.
