As we enjoy our few cool weeks of spring, we hit one last cold snap that brought in a good bit of rain … but it has otherwise been a very dry month. The dry warm weather invites the pest and disease problems that we struggle with through our hot Florida summers.
One such issue has gotten a lot of attention this year, the tussock moth. Marion and surrounding counties have seen large infestations of them already over the last 2-3 weeks; they have defoliated our oak trees, covered the front of our Extension building, and decimated vegetables at a local organic farm. Other areas have seen relatively few of these pests.

The days are growing longer, but they re not quite long enough or warm enough to get into gardening in earnest just yet. But the days for starting some plants from seeds, indoors, are close at hand.
