Master Gardener Volunteers keep the community s gardens growing

As a horticultural agent, I focus on the amazing group of Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) that I coordinate, however, there are volunteers that assist with all of our program areas, including 4-H Youth and Family and Consumer Sciences programs. These volunteers help run 4-H clubs, such as Insect Club and Brick Masters Club, and support summer day camps on topics such as sewing, grilling, and adulting. While I am biased towards the Master Gardener Volunteer group, all our Extension volunteers bring high-value skills and knowledge to the table and share those skills with the community to improve the general quality of life for all citizens.

The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program provides intensive training in horticulture to interested Ohio residents who then volunteer their time assisting with educational programs and activities for Ohio residents through their local OSU Extension county office. Volunteers are not required to have gardening skills or knowledge, but a passion for learning about gardening and sharing this knowledge with others is a must, according to Erika Lyon, agriculture and natural resources educator, OSU Extension Jefferson and Harrison counties.

Eastern Lubber Grasshopper a major garden pest

The Eastern Lubber Grasshopper (Romalae microptera) is a native grasshopper that can occur in numbers great enough to decimate a garden, landscape or agricultural crops. With over 100 species of known host plants, most gardens will have at least one of these preferred plants. Vegetables that are less likely to be consumed are tomato, eggplant, sweet corn, celery okra, fennel and pepper. Leafy greens and plants related to peas/beans are often hit the hardest by these pests. Ornamental plants that are frequently defoliated include lantana, amaryllis, oleander, and pickerel weed to name a few. You may have noticed the small juveniles (nymphs) hatching out. They emerge from underground burrows where the egg pod was deposited in late fall or winter. These can contain as many as 80 eggs. The nymphs are black with an orange or yellow stripe. After molting, they may appear to be red rather than black while the new exoskeleton hardens. The different growing stages are called instars.
