Annual budget: City continues to prioritise support for residents amid ongoing Covid-19 impact

Speaker, let me start today by welcoming you to your new position, and congratulating you for taking up this key seat in our council. I am confident that your 26 years as a councillor in service to the people of this city will serve you in good stead to continue putting the people of our beautiful city first, and overseeing these council meetings with fairness and professionalism.
Budget
Speaker, today I table the City’s annual budget of R56,6 billion, which amounts to R8,3 billion for the capital budget, and R48,3 billion for the operating budget. The annual budget for 2021/22 outlines the funded commitments of the City, which will see us deliver on our Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and associated strategies in order to effectively support the lives and livelihoods of all our residents.

Over 1000 years behind bars for copper cable thieves

The 5 accused were found guilty of 50 counts of copper cable theft and received a cumulative sentence of 1,250 years in prison.
The Western Cape High Court sentenced the group to a cumulative 1,250 years imprisonment. The charges were linked to a copper theft syndicate operating in the Western Cape and Namaqualand, reports Lester Kiewit.
Lester talks to the senior security manager at Eskom, Karen Pillay about the verdict.
Eskom and Telkom are very pleased with this groundbreaking sanction imposed, especially in so far as the application of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act as well as the Prevention of Organised Crom Act.
The return to the workplace is a focal point for many in the built environment but one of the most important elements is easy to overlook. Guest services will be vital in the return to the workplace. The workplace will inevitably look different after Covid. We have become more aware of our spaces, how clean they are, and what spaces building users share. Employees have also become more conscious of the pros and cons of the workplace. For some, a year of working from home has been a welcome break from the stress and time taken by a commute.
