Our Saviors in Westby shares Christmas story with live Nativity

Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Westby will once again present the community with a longtime Christmas gift – the annual live Nativity on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year’s live Nativity will be a drive-through event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Visitors are asked to turn on West State Street near Dregne’s Scandinavian Gifts and look for signs. If there is inclement weather, the event will be held New Year’s Eve. “For years it’s been done indoors, but we couldn’t do that (this year),” said Pastor John Dumke. “We couldn’t give it up.”

Pope Francis: Those who pray never turn their backs on the world

VATICAN CITY: People who pray for others are like God’s antennas, Pope Francis said at the general audience Wednesday. In his address Dec. 16, the pope insisted that those who seek solitude and silence to intercede for others are not evading reality.   “Whoever can knock on the door of someone who prays finds a compassionate heart which does not exclude anyone,” he said, seated beside a traditional depiction of the nativity. He added: “These people pray for the entire world, bearing its sorrows and sins on their shoulders. They pray for each and every person: they are like God’s ‘antennas’ in this world.”

Christmas in Venezuela: between hallacas, music and nostalgia

There is no Venezuelan dish that is made with more love than the hallacas. Preparing them takes many hours and the whole family is involved in the process: there are those who wash the leaves, those who chop the ingredients and the most important role is for the person who has enough experience to make the stew. Then comes the task of assembling, decorating and tying the banana leaf with a cotton string. When families are separated by borders, neighbors and friends gather to help with the preparation. And that is the beauty of the hallaca, the moments that are shared to prepare them lovingly fuel the Christmas tables. The hallacas have a base of corn flour, with a stew of vegetables and meats, in addition raisins, stuffed green olives and capers are added.
