Key Highlights
In urban areas of the state, the percentage of women, who were married before the legal age, has reduced from 28.5% in 2005-06 to 21.3% in 2020-19.
Experts attributed the decline in underage marriages to the enactment of the Prohibition of Child Marriages Act, 2006, awareness campaigns, complaint mechanisms like children’s helplines, etc.
Bengaluru: Rural Karnataka has recorded a sharp drop of 50 per cent in cases of underage marriages in the last 15 years, the National Family Health Survey- 5 (2019-20) data, released by Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan this Tuesday, has revealed.
