HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) As President-elect Joe Biden lays out his stimulus proposal, one key plan he has is to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. Currently, the minimum wage is at $7.25 an hour, which was set in 2009. No one working 40 hours a week should live below the poverty line, said Biden while addressing the nation Thursday regarding his stimulus proposal. He added, That s what it means if you work for less than $15 an hour and work 40 hours a week, you re living in poverty.
ABC13 asked Houston-area business owners and workers their thoughts on the proposal. Hopefully they ll do a gradual increase over the next few years and bottom line, we re going to have to increase prices, said Danny Hart with the Galveston Restaurant Group.

DETROIT – The battle over the minimum wage heated up Friday.
A Fight for $15 rally took place at a McDonald’s near the intersection of Livernois Avenue and West McNichols Road on Detroit’s west side. The weather was less than ideal for a rally, but it didn’t deter protesters.
Fast-food workers joined protests in more than a dozen cities across the country. They want the minimum wage to increase to $15 an hour.
Workers walked off the job to join the Fight for $15 movement. Demonstrators want the incoming Joe Biden administration to raise the federal minimum wage within Biden’s first 100 days of taking office. It could raise wages for nearly 40% of Black workers and reduce the racial wage gap.

The country’s very low minimum wage comes at a high cost. And for taxpayers, it adds up to more than $100 billion a year.
That number comes from a new analysis of safety-net usage by Ken Jacobs, Ian Eve Perry, and Jenifer MacGillvary of UC Berkeley’s Labor Center. It identifies working families with at least one member who would get a raise if the federal minimum wage were lifted to $15 an hour, and finds that the government spends about $107 billion a year on Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), cash welfare, food stamps, and the earned-income tax credit for those families.

Minimum wage increases went into effect in 20 U.S. states on January 1, 2021, adding pressure to the debate over raising the $7.25 federal minimum wage.
At the same time, businesses are dealing with the financial implications of the minimum wage hike while also struggling amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“Everybody’s trying to paint this whole thing with one broad brush stroke,” John Horne, owner of the Anna Maria Oyster Bar in Bradenton, Fla., told Yahoo Finance. “$15 [minimum wage] is fine in Miami. but it’s not good in a small town, you know?”
