As Azerbaijan Steps Up Advance in Syunik, Yerevan Turns to CSTO for Rapid Response

Azerbaijani forces have entered the Sev Lidj (Black Lake) region of Syunik Azerbaijani forces continued their breach of Armenia’s border and on Thursday, according to Armenia’s Defense Ministry, they pushed their positions forward toward Vardenis in the Gegharkunik Province and Sisian that is located in the Syunik Province. Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had a telephone conversation with RF President Vladimir Putin. Nikol Pashinyan informed the Russian President about the situation in Syunik Marz following Azeri troops’ subversive infiltration into Armenia’s sovereign territory. Armenia’s Acting Prime Minister told President Putin that yesterday he instructed to formally apply to the Collective Security Treaty Organization to start consultations in accordance with Article 2 of the Collective Security Treaty Procedures. Vladimir Putin considered the further escalation inadmissible, expressed hope that the situation could be stabilized as shortly as possible and necessary conditions would be provided for implementing the agreements specified in the trilateral statements of November 9, 2020 and January 11, 2021.

The call was held late on Thursday at Armenia s request after its defence ministry accused Azerbaijan of moving forces into its territory and Armenia s prosecutor general opened a criminal case into an infringement of territorial integrity . Azerbaijan dismissed the accusations, saying it was enforcing its own border. Armenia said on Thursday it had stopped the Azeri advance and that Azeri troops had returned to their positions. There were no reports of casualties.

Of course, the Armenian side expressed extreme concern over the border situation. President Putin emphasized the need to abide by the provisions of the trilateral agreement and related documents, especially the provisions of the ceasefire, Peskov said as quoted by the source.  Earlier, a CSTO spokesperson told RIA Novosti that the secretary of the organization has not yet received a document from Armenia regarding the appeal related to the situation on the border with Azerbaijan.
