A Zimbabwean intelligence officer and that country’s mining boss’s former driver, who was arrested allegedly smuggling 13kg of gold through OR Tambo International Airport, are key to an international precious metals smuggling syndicate investigation.
Sunday Times Daily has learned that Hawks detectives and their Zimbabwean counterparts are working together after last month’s arrest of 33-year-old Tashinga Masinire.

A security
guard who allegedly stole several millions of rands belonging to his employer
is expected to bring a formal bail application this week.
Josiah
Marietta Lekgoathi, 45, made his first appearance in the Kempton Park
Magistrates Court on Monday.
Lekgoathi
faces a charge of theft.
It is
alleged that on 5 April, Lekgoathi was on duty with his two other colleagues
conducting money drop-offs and pickups from various ATMs around Selby,
Johannesburg. The
trio later returned to the company base in Edenvale with the remaining money.

The suspect was part of the three-man crew that started their daily duties with all drop-offs and pickups from the ATM’S around Selby, Johannesburg on 5 April 2021. They returned to the company base at Edenvale with the remaining money.
One guard was dropped outside the entrance, the driver proceeded to park the armored vehicle inside. The third crewman allegedly loaded the money bag in his private vehicle, left the premises without being searched, and never returned to work.
A case of theft was reported to the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team that traced and arrested the suspect on Saturday. His vehicle that was allegedly used in the commission of the crime was also seized.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) netted the suspects and unregistered drugs worth R6 million in three different sting operations.
