Kenya: Mombasa county rescinds order to sack 86 doctors

January 7, 2021 ANKARA  The Mombasa county government in Kenya has rescinded an order to sack 86 striking doctors following negotiations with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), The Star local news website reported Thursday. The move came a day after the Mombasa government sacked the doctors, including KMPDU Secretary General Chibanzi Mwachonda, for refusing to return to work. The strike is part of a countrywide labor action by health workers against a number of issues including a lack of Personnel Protection Equipment (PPE) while facing risks from COVID-19, with a number of them dying from the virus. KMPDU CEO Daniel Yumbya said the aim of the discussion with the Mombasa government was to ensure that there is an “immediate resolution of the ongoing matter to ensure that the delivery of quality healthcare is not affected,” according to The Star.

Kenyan government sacks 86 striking doctors

Chibanzi Mawachonda, secretary general of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Pharmacists and Dentist’s Union (KMPDU), a doctors association, was among those dismissed. Speaking by telephone to Anadolu news agency, Chibanzi Mawachonda of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Pharmacists and Dentist’s Union said the government’s position was illegal and un-called for. He condemned the move and called on the government to resolve its grievances as opposed to firing them. Talks with the government late December over salary and lack of protective gear, led many doctors returning to work. But, some refused saying that their issues remained unresolved. The sacked doctors have vowed to take the government to court.
