Dr Chibanzi Mwachonda loses KMPDU secretary general post

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union has voted out Dr Chibanzi Mwachonda as its secretary-general.
Following the elections held today, Dr Mwachonda will now be replaced by Dr Ouma Davji, who secured 36 per cent of the votes. Dr Mwachonda came third after having garneerd 15.5 per cent of the votes.
The incoming national chairperson is Dr Abidan Muchuma, who secured 36.6 per cent of the vote, followed by Benjamin Magare with 32.1 per cent.
The union s new vice-chairperson is Dr David Mundia who garnered 45.6 per cent of the vote.
Some of Dr Mwachonda’s highlights as secretary-general were characterized by calls to the government to review the plight of healthcare workers amid the ongoing pandemic.

Trade unions are facing unprecedented tough times amid coronavirus and constant attacks from the government.
As Kenyans marked International Labour Day yesterday, trade unionists claim they have little to celebrate as gains realised over the years are being eroded.
They said the attacks are aimed at reducing unions membership to weaken their bargaining power.
The struggle for workers rights dates back years since independence. Despite having a progressive constitution, threats to trade unions are on the rise, with members haemorrhage to weaken them.

Passengers from India to Undergo Mandatory Testing as Flights are Suspended
Kenya has suspended all passenger flights from India for 14 days following a spike in COVID-19 infections.
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe on Wednesday said the suspension will take effect from Friday, with those arriving before then expected to undergo mandatory testing.
“Those found positive for Covid-19 shall be isolated for 14 days at their own cost,” CS Kagwe announced.
The CS, however, said cargo flights will continue upon adherence to the Coronavirus containment measures.
Following the announcement by Kagwe, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council released a list of 10 isolation facilities that will be used by passengers from India.
The announcement was made by Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, who added that the announcement will take effect from Friday.
“Those arriving in the country in the next 72 hours from India shall undertake mandatory testing. Those found positive for Covid-19 shall be isolated for 14 days at their own cost,” he explained.
“Following the resolution by @MOH Kenya to suspend all passenger flights into the country from India, the Council has released a list of isolation facilities. Those traveling into the country from India will undergo mandatory quarantine/isolation at their own cost,” the Council posted on Twitter.
The isolation facilities which are in Nairobi and Mombasa will charge between charging between Sh7500 to Sh14,000 for full board accomodation.
