COVID vaccine available: Cape Cod tries to reach younger people now

HYANNIS Paula Borowski, of Hyannis, was eager to get immunized against COVID-19, but she dreaded the idea of having to travel to a mass vaccination site off-Cape or spending hours online trying to book an appointment. As full-time head baker at the Cottage Street Bakery in Orleans who also works one day a week at Buckies in Dennisport, Borowski, 64, has precious little time to chase vaccines. It turned out that getting her first shot of Pfizer was a piece of cake. COVID-19 vaccine is available on Cape Cod Where and when can you get it?

Cape Cod Times COVID-19 vaccinations began rolling out in mid-December on Cape Cod as part of a three-phase schedule set up by Massachusetts health officials. Phase two began Feb. 1 and people ages 75 and up are the first group eligible for vaccinations. Each phase is subdivided by eligible groups of people based on age, health risks, jobs and other factors. Vaccinations for the general public will begin in April in phase three. In the latest: Gov. Charlie Baker opened up phase two COVID-19 vaccinations Thursday, Feb. 18, to about 1 million people age 65 and up. But Cape Cod officials said they re worried there s not enough vaccine available for people age 75 and up who still haven t gotten shots. Yarmouth Health Director Bruce Murphy, for one, called the news of the eligibility expansion “very disappointing.”

Sandwich and Barnstable both held vax clinics for first responders

SANDWICH Town officials said they vaccinated about 250 residents ages 85 and over this week as part of a municipal COVID-19 immunization effort.  Assistant Town Manager Heather Harper said the town plans to continue to reach out to residents 85 and over who have called the town s helpline, which went live on Jan. 19. But she urged people to grab the first COVID-19 vaccination they can, be it at a mass vaccination site off Cape, through a pharmacy or a regional clinic sponsored by Barnstable County. “If you can get (an appointment), take it,” Harper said Friday. “Don’t wait for us.” Next week, the town plans to focus on dispensing second doses of vaccine to first responders from Sandwich, Falmouth, Mashpee, Bourne and Joint Base Cape Cod who got their initial dose of the Moderna vaccine the week of Jan. 11 at the Sandwich Human Services Building, Harper said.
