Cape Fear Valley Health sets up overflow tents as COVID-19 hospitalizations surge in North Carolina

Intensive units across the state, including UNC Health, are feeling the strain of staffing as the number of COVID-19 cases begins to outnumber available nurses. The two tents were set up on Thursday morning and will be able to fit up to 30 patients at a time. CFVH officials say the connecting tents, which will have socially distanced seating, will be utilized if their main waiting room volume exceeds 30 patients. Susan Phelps is a registered nurse at the hospital and Corporate Service Line Director for the Emergency Department. Phelps said the Fayetteville hospital currently has around 60 patients who are COVID-19 positive, the majority of them dealing with severe symptoms.

Cumberland County health, elected officials lay out potential plan for Pfizer vaccine

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) As Cumberland County continues to see COVID-19 metrics trending in the wrong direction, local health officials expect to see the first shipment of the Pfizer vaccine next week. County, city, and Fort Bragg officials held a press conference outside the Cumberland County Courthouse to debrief residents on the latest numbers and vaccine information on Wednesday afternoon. Every week, the number of positive hospitalized patients continues to rise, Michael Nagowski, the CEO of Cape Fear Valley Health said during the 3 p.m. press conference. As of Wednesday, the county s COVID-19 total case number sits at 10,625 with 124 deaths. Nagowski says they re seeing a spike in numbers that they believe is connected to Thanksgiving. Right now, there are 60 patients at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, who are hospitalized and COVID positive.

Cumberland County expected to get doses of COVID-19 vaccine next week

“This year must be different,” he said. Green said residents should limit the size of their social circles. “Even small gatherings carry a risk,” she said. Green said 9.6% of tests performed over the past two weeks have been positive. She said health officials would like that number to be close to 5%. “Today is the time for us to come together to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community,” she said. Mike Nagowski, CEO of the Cape Fear Valley Health system, said hospital officials don’t know the exact number of vaccine doses it will receive initially but expect it to be about 5,000.
