HALIFAX A street in Sydney, N.S., has a new name, and not only does it have a nice ring to it, but the meaning behind it is making one community more proud than ever. The road, known to many locals as Sydney’s ‘Road to Nowhere,’ was recently renamed to Crawford Crossing a tribute to the Maritimes’ first Black municipal police officer. Carl ‘Campy’ Crawford, a longtime resident of Whitney Pier, N.S., joined the Sydney Police Force in 1964. Although he wasn’t looking to make history when he joined the force, that’s exactly what he did with a street now named in his memory.

Sitting in the mayor s office in downtown Sydney, N.S., Amanda McDougall works on business as five-week-old Emmett coos softly from a small couch next to his mother s desk.
Just over a month after giving birth, McDougall the first woman to be elected mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality is back on the job and looking to normalize the idea of new parents in positions of power. People were ready to see something completely different, said McDougall, who was elected in October. What could be more different than a 37-year-old and her five-week-old in the mayor s office?
Cape Breton Regional Municipality's new council has only met twice since the October elections, even though policy calls for two meetings a month. But Mayor Amanda McDougall says that's OK. She's planning to overhaul of the policy.
