Elections 2021: The race to be Cambridgeshire and Peterborough mayor

The BBC has been looking at what the role entails and how it came into being in 2017. Why does Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have a mayor? Mayors exist at local authorities up and down the country. Some, such as in Bedford, are elected and work as the leaders of councils. Many are ceremonial and have no administrative power, instead acting as a figurehead for the area they represent.

Massive opposition to Haddenham homes application

Other objectors felt there was a need to consider that “Haddenham is a countryside village and that the countryside and wildlife needs to be preserved.  “There is a need to minimise loss of habitat and species and improve and maintain environment for general well-being of everyone”.   Others felt the GP surgery and school were already oversubscribed and existing developments around Haddenham already having increased impact.  “Development would place strain on village infrastructure, schools and doctors. Medical services are under severe pressure,” says another objector.   Planners argue that development in this area is “strictly controlled” says the council.   The application will go before the planning committee on May 4 with councillors being told by their officers that the house estate is not acceptable.  

Ely Litter Pickers boosted thanks to McDonald s donation

Published: 11:28 AM April 22, 2021    Updated: 5:37 PM April 22, 2021 The Ely Litter Pickers group received 24 pickers and bin hoops from McDonald s based in Ely Leisure Village as part of their bid to clean up East Cambridgeshire. - Credit: Brian Calvert/Peter Royle A litter picking group has received help from McDonald s in its ongoing mission to clean up East Cambridgeshire.  Ely Litter Pickers has received 24 new pickers and bin hoops from the restaurant, based in the city’s leisure village, which will be loaned out to anyone who wants to volunteer for the group.  The fast food chain has now donated £600 of litter-picking equipment for volunteers to use in places including Ely, Littleport, Mepal and Little Downham. 

New consultation for East West Rail plans

More consultation for East West Rail options. - Credit: EAST WEST RAIL The East West Rail Company has announced a further consultation will be conducted on the proposed route for the Oxford to Cambridge line, which will see a new station close to St Neots. There are five route options and route alignment 1 in Section D is emerging as the preference, and this includes a new St Neots South Station. The route being championed by Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC), Bedford Borough Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridge City Council is Route E, however. HDC has told The Hunts Post the decision was the result of strong and deliberate collaborative work across all four councils to provide East West Rail with context and data to understand the route that would result in the greatest potential for future success and ambition of the district.

East Cambs Council announce Covid-19 spot checks on firms

Published: 11:31 AM April 21, 2021    Businesses across Ely and East Cambridgeshire have been warned that checks are to be made to ensure they are Covid-19 secure. Enforcement could follow if they are found in breach of regulations. - Credit: Archant Businesses in East Cambridgeshire – including those shops and pubs that opened on April 12- were warned they could be closed if they are not Covid-19 secure.   East Cambridgeshire District Council said that checks have begun and that “advice and guidance will be provided to manage risk and protect workers, customers and visitors”.  A council spokesperson warned: “Where some businesses are not managing this, immediate action will be taken.
