Kerala Elections 2021 Candidate Watch: PC Vishnunath, a do-or-die battle for the once-powerful Congress leader

They call PC Vishnunath the powerhouse of Congress in Kerala. But the vice-president of the state unit seemed powerless when choosing his constituency. He became a kind of political football, tossed around from one constituency to another. At first, he was designated to run from Kollam, but Congress had to backtrack in the face of stiff opposition from party officials in the district. Congress relented and gave the seat to Bindhu Krishna. Vishnunath was instead given Vattiyoorkavu, which has elected K. Muralidharan twice. But that decision too evoked protests. Finally, he had to be satisfied with the Kundara seat. At 43, Vishnunath is one of the younger Congress leaders, having come up through the ranks, and was active in college politics through the Kerala Students Union, the student wing of the Congress. He has had success early on, winning from Chengannur in 2006, and retaining the Assembly seat in 2011.

Barring strongholds, it s a see-saw battle in most seats

LDF and UDF are principal rivals but NDA may act as spoiler in many places Election battles in the six northern districts are as adrenaline-fuelled as in other parts of the State, but no other region perhaps has as many constituencies witnessing run-of-the-mill electioneering as these. It cannot be otherwise as political allegiance generally matters in the region. While the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front are principal rivals, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance is feared to serve as spoilers in many places. Barring the strongholds of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian Union Muslim League, most of the constituencies in this region are up for grabs.

Many fresh faces on Cong list

All three sitting MLAs get seat; Ansajitha Russal only woman in the fray The Congress retained all three of its sitting MLAs in the district, while bringing in quite a few fresh faces on its list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections. Putting rest to days of speculation regarding the candidate for the Nemom seat, the party announced the name of K. Muraleedharan, MP. Kerala Pradesh Congress (KPCC) president Mullappally Ramachandran, who announced the list here on Sunday afternoon, said that the candidate for the Vattiyurkavu constituency, which had witnessed a revolt from the local leadership of the Congress, would be announced later.
