Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom refuses to give up pandemic emergency powers

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said he will be holding onto his state of emergency powers for now despite the state preparing to reopen. California’s Democrat governor made the announcement on Friday, less than two weeks before the state is slated to drop its COVID-19 restrictions.
Newsom held a widely publicized event in which he named winners in a state lottery for vaccinated residents. In what was reminiscent of a game show, Newsom drew the first winners of more than $116 million in prizes in an effort to press more residents to get vaccinated.

The California Republican Party held its Spring Organizing Convention over the weekend, projecting an optimism bolstered by the current effort to recall Governor Gavin Newsom and recent congressional victories.
Sidestepping some minor dissent in the ranks over the process of endorsing a recall candidate, and the status of a California Republican congressman who voted to impeach President Donald Trump, party leaders delivered a confident message over Zoom calls during the virtual event.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing a renewed recall effort amid the state s ongoing struggle against the spread of coronavirus.
Newsom faced a rough year, but it may become tougher for him as many grew outraged over his dining with friends recently, despite his warnings to avoid social gatherings and stay home.
The event fueled a recall effort that is gaining momentum. While California is no stranger to recalls, they rarely get on the ballot.
