First round of COVID-19 vaccine administered in California

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - The vaccination effort to combat COVID-19 is now officially underway in California. Governor Gavin Newsom was on hand as some of the first doses were administered. On Monday, the governor said the vaccine is a light at the end of the tunnel, but he said make no mistake, we are still in the proverbial tunnel.
With the push of the plunger on a hypodermic needle, California s vaccination effort against COVID-19 is in effect. A nurse in Southern California, who s on the front lines of the pandemic was among the first in the state to receive the Pfizer vaccine.
Another set of scientists, this one more than five-dozen deep, is sounding the alarm over Snake River salmon and steelhead, saying if the imperiled fish are to be saved the four lower Snake River dams must go.
On Monday, 68 fisheries researchers from the Pacific Northwest released a letter penned to the regionâs congressional delegation, governors and fisheries policymakers methodically making the case for breaching the dams.
âThis scientific recommendation wasnât taken lightly. This is relying on a review of a large preponderance of information that a bunch of us analyzed over and over again over the years,â said Howard Schaller, a retired fisheries research biologist who worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

With cameras clicking and Gov. Gavin Newsom standing beside her wearing a surgical mask, intensive care nurse Helen Cordova rolled up the sleeve of her blue scrubs Monday afternoon and became one of the first Californians to get a coronavirus vaccine.
“Protect me,” she said with a laugh, just before nurse Marilyn Lansangan jabbed her right deltoid.
Cheers broke out from the small, masked crowd of doctors, nurses and elected officials before the syringe was even out of Cordova’s arm.
The inoculation in a conference room at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center ushered in a hopeful new phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has sickened more than 1.6 million Californians and killed more than 21,000.
