The Pirates have placed right-hander
Kyle Crick on release waivers, according to Alex Stumpf of DK Pittsburgh Sports (via Twitter). Crick was designated for assignment earlier this week and cleared DFA waivers, and the Bucs elected to part ways with Crick rather than outright him to Triple-A.
The move ends Crick’s three-plus seasons in Pittsburgh after 139 1/3 innings and several ups and downs within the righty’s overall solid 3.62 ERA. Crick had a very strong 2018 season but struggled in 2019, missed most of 2020 due to injury, and again couldn’t find any consistency this year. Control has been Crick’s biggest problem, as he has an ungainly 16% walk rate since the start of the 2019 season.
Pirates acquire LHP Dillon Peters from Angels for cash

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired left-hander Dillon Peters from the Los Angeles Angels on Monday in exchange for cash considerations and assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Peters, 28, was designated for assignment last Wednesday by the Angels after going 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A Salt Lake this season.
He is 7-8 with a 5.83 ERA in 31 career games (24 starts) with the Miami Marlins (2017-18) and Angels (2019-20).
To make room on the 40-man roster, Pittsburgh designated right-hander Kyle Crick for assignment.
Crick, 28, went 1-1 with a 4.44 ERA in 27 relief appearances this season with the Pirates.

To date, Peters has struggled to miss bats at the big league level, striking out a below-average 16.7% of batters faced and generating swinging strikes on only 8.7% of his offerings (11.4% league average).
Smith, Escobar lead Diamondbacks over Pirates 4-2

PHOENIX (AP) Caleb Smith pitched 6 2/3 stellar innings, Eduardo Escobar hit a two-run homer for the second straight game and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 on Monday night.
It was a nice bounce-back outing for Smith (3-6), who was rocked for nine earned runs in one inning during a 22-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers just before the All-Star break. The left-hander even earned his first career stolen base, surprising the Pirates by getting a huge jump and swiping second.
“Swiping bags like it’s my job,” Smith said grinning.
