COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - Deputies accepted a newborn child surrendered under the stateâs Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies Act, the South Carolina Department of Social Services said.
The baby, born Friday weighing 8 pounds, 15 ounces, was surrendered to Laurens County deputies at the Prisma Health Laurens County Hospital, DSS spokesperson Danielle Jones said.
Under the provisions of the law, Laurens County DSS officials took custody of the child.

The Coronerâs Office and Greer Police Department are investigating, according to a release from the office.
The babyâs family has not yet been located or identified.
