Time for cooperation New KCTU leader should show concessions and compromise The nation s largest umbrella labor group has chosen a hardline figure as its new leader. In a contested vote held Thursday, Yang Kyeong-su was elected to head the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), the more militant of the two labor umbrella groups in the country. The student activist-turned-labor leader, the first KCTU chairman to have worked as a non-regular worker, will begin his three-year term in January. In his speech after being elected, Yang, 44, said, For the first time in history, the country will see its largest labor group organize a general strike. Given that he was backed by the leading faction in the KCTU with more than 1 million members, his bellicosity might be understandable. Yet it is disheartening to see the new leader of the top labor group mention a strike in his inaugural address.
