KT, LG Uplus considering legal action over music copyright fee hike
Posted : 2021-02-19 15:44 By Kim Bo-eun
Telecom firms KT and LG Uplus are reviewing possible legal action against the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which approved rules hiking fees for content involving music copyrights. KT operates the over-the-top (OTT) service Seezn, while LG Uplus runs U+Mobile tv.
This development comes after local OTT service providers launched a collective suit over the newly added rule outlining the fee hike, requested by the Korea Music Copyright Association and approved by the Ministry in December.
On Feb. 5, the group of OTT service providers, comprised of Wavve, Watcha and Tving, filed a suit with the Seoul Administrative Court against the Ministry. The suit seeks to cancel the Ministry s approval of the revisions of existing regulations on fees collected from content involving music copyrights.
The Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) has announced the recipients of its annual Royalties Awards!
On February 18, the Korea Music Copyright Association revealed that Big Hit Entertainment producer Pdogg, who has worked on many of BTS’s hit songs, was both the composer and the lyricist with the highest earnings from royalties in the popular music category in 2020. Pdogg claimed both awards for the third consecutive year, following his wins in 2018 and 2019.
Producer Cho Young Soo, who has worked with many famous artists including SG Wannabe, T-ara, Im Young Woong, Hong Jin Young, and Jang Yoon Jung, won the top prize in the arrangement category.
The group size and diversity also helped. Some K-pop bands can have as many as seven, 13 or even 23 members. Four was just right, enough to distinguish themselves from one another, and with more chances for fans to familiarize with what each member brings to the table. In the Netflix film “Light Up The Sky,” Blackpink’s longtime producer Teddy Park describes it well:
“Jisoo, a straight-up Korean girl that grew up in Korea. She’s the unnie of the group, she’s the oldest. She does have that professional poker face… Rosie, a Korean girl that was raised in Australia. She stays here ‘til like six o’clock a.m. in the studio… Lisa from Thailand, she’s always got that cool, calm, ‘It’ll be okay, we’re all good’ smile. When it’s crunch time, she has this executioner, killer instinct… Jennie, born in Korea but moved to New Zealand. She’s super clear, her opinions, her emotions. She’s a perfectionist.”
