Colombian Independence Day is on Tuesday, but celebrations have already started in Invercargill at the weekend. More than 200 former Colombian refugees live in Southland and a lot of them were celebrating at the Southern Institute of Technology’s Hansen Hall on Saturday. The event was organised by the MAR Colombia Charity Trust, which is for Colombian immigrants in Southland, and the Southland Multicultural Council. Trust president Andrea Murrell said Saturday’s event was important to the Colombian community in Southland.

The Coollab Festival, presented in partnership with the Coollab Project in Santa Ana, returns to Argyros Stage this Sunday, July 18 from 4-9pm. Angelica Rivera and her husband, Roman Lopez, own the Colmex Construction office building where Golden Gate Bistro is located. Rivera, a Bogotá native who moved to New Orleans from Orlando, always dreamed of one day owning her own restaurant; she missed the easy access to Colombian food that she had grown accustomed to while living in Orlando.
