FHSU nets partnership with Community College of the Air Force

FHSU Press Release The university that delivers the best value in online education anywhere is expanding to meet the educational needs of career-minded airmen serving in the United States Air Force. Fort Hays State University is now a partnering school in the Community College of the Air Force’s (CCAF) General Education Mobile (GEM) program initiative. The GEM program was created to help service members earn an associate in applied science degree to advance in their military career or civilian life. The current average graduation time for CCAF students is eight years because general education courses are usually the last taken. By partnering with institutions like FHSU with the ability to deliver high-quality, flexible online courses, the CCAF expects to reduce the average graduation time to less than four years.

Defiance Brewing to open family friendly eatery downtown

Hays Daily News There’s a lot left to decide about the downtown Hays location for Defiance Brewing Co., but one thing is for sure, all the brewing will be done in barrels, say two of the owners. “ Pediococcus lactobacillus,” explained Matt Bender, saying the scientific name without a stumble. Bender on Wednesday was describing the new barrel fermentation program the popular Hays micro-brewery will use at its new downtown location, the former Gutch’s Bar & Grill, 111 W. 7th. “People just loosely call them fermentation bugs,” said Bender. That’s where barrels previously used to ferment wine, whiskey, tequila and other spirits are repurposed to ferment a barrel-aged beer, added Dylan Sultzer, also a Defiance owner.

Fort Hays State University Top 10 news items for 2020

By Tisa Mason, President, Fort Hays State University David Letterman probably did much to instill the notion of “Top 10 Lists” in our popular culture. But decades before the late-night host did his thing, newspapers were culling past editions to create year-end round-ups of their top stories. Ten is a good number; after all, it’s what we can count on our two hands, so in keeping with tradition, here’s a list of the top 10 news items at Fort Hays State University this year. The list, roughly in chronological order, is certainly not all-encompassing – there are great stories and good news every day at FHSU – but it does provide a means of looking back and recounting some of the many blessings we enjoyed in 2020.
