On Friday, U.S. air travel set a pandemic-era record with TSA screening more than 1.5 million people at airports. Many people packed their bags and headed back to Southwest Florida International Airport, some for the first time since the pandemic began. Evan Mounts came from Ohio. “We were actually here when Ohio started shutting down so a lot of fear and anxiety we weren’t sure if we should travel home at that time. We haven’t been anywhere since then,” said Mounts.

The district opened 1,000 appointments for eligible employees older than 50 this week in partnership with North Collier Fire and Rescue, the district announced at Tuesday s school board meeting. Local health officials and the Collier County School Board discussed during a health update Tuesday what the remainder of the school year could look like for students and employees.  Masks, a frequent topic of debate, are likely to stay through the end of the year, according to board discussion. There are no current changes to health and safety measures, according to the district.

“The Department of Health and the state are indicating it should be soon but it can’t give a date,” he said. “They are telling us in the next couple of weeks or couple of months. It is vague. Millennium will reach out to patients to schedule vaccination appointments when the time comes; the practice is telling patients not to call Millennium because there will not be a waiting list, he said. “Because I don’t think that is fair,” Perez-Trepichio said. Since it is uncertain how many doses will be shipped, the plan is for Millennium to contact patients 65 and older based on medical conditions that put them at greatest risk, he said.

NCH Healthcare System in Collier County and Fawcett Memorial in Charlotte County say they are still waiting to hear when they will get the vaccine.
