Kentucky researchers identify novel rotavirus strain

June 01, 2021 By Published on May 12, 2021 The University of Kentucky’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center and its Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have likely identified a novel rotavirus strain in very young foals that can’t be detected using current tests. The university in Lexington, Kentucky, continues to investigate an outbreak of diarrhea in foals after local equine practitioners reported an unusual increase in diarrhea cases in foals between 2 to 5 days old. Foals can commonly develop diarrhea a week to 10 days after birth, according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Dr. Emma Adam, associate professor at UK and a research and industry liaison with the Gluck Center, said it became clear in mid-February that there was a pattern of cases that behaved like cases of infection with equine Rotavirus A, a common virus that causes foal diarrhea. However, the diagnostic tests were coming back negative.
