While students get to hit the snooze button a few more times tomorrow, teachers around the province are hitting the pavement for an hour or so in their first strike action protesting the lack of a contract.
After a Quebec Superior Court judge sided with the unions that school boards and service centres had no business seeking a permanent injunction in court against the strike, teachersâ unions announced an action consisting of only beginning to teach at 9:31 Wednesday morning.
Teachers have been without a contract for more than a year, and are angry about the state of negotiations, as unions drop their demands for smaller class sizes in the face of Quebecâs refusal to address it, and instead focus on reduced workloads and wages. The governmentâs latest wage offer is a 5% hike over three years with premiums in years one and two, and a boost of up to 1% if inflation surpasses 5%. Teachers are asking for 6% over three years.

Just about every Quebec parent got to walk a mile in teachers’ shoes last spring when schools were closed for nearly four months. Most of us emerged with a new appreciation for just how tough it is to come up with interesting lesson plans, motivate children and capture their attention.
MONTREAL Teachers across Quebec bagen a strike Wednesday morning in order to pressure the government to move forward on contract negotiations, which union heads say are at an impasse. The strike has affected 58 school boards and service centres in Quebec, all of which are under the Federation of Education Unions (CSQ), and the Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers (QPAT). “Teachers are actually pretty angry,” said QPAT President Heidi Yetman, who spoke to CTV News Wednesday over chants and clanging noisemakers. “I mean they re really angry at this government that has not taken care of us during the pandemic.” The strike affects 73,000 French and English teachers across Quebec. According to QPAT, the issues being negotiated with the government include improvement to daily working conditions.
