More than two thirds of council employees report working longer hours during the pandemic and more than half say mental wellbeing in the workforce is at an “all-time low”, according to a survey.
The report by the Association for Public Service Excellence found 70% said their working hours had increased during the pandemic, including one in four who reported “excessive” working hours.
Almost a third (31%) of the 312 survey responses from chief executives, senior managers, frontline workers and councillors, had taken on additional duties during the crisis and were acting as part of the emergency response team.
Concerns about the mental wellbeing of their colleagues were reported by 85% of respondents, and 57% said mental wellbeing among the workforce was at an all-time low - figures which Apse described as “alarming”.
