Two COVID-19 Variants Found In Neighboring Oregon Counties

1:32 KLCC s Tiffany Eckert has this report on the discovery of two different COVID-19 variants one in Lane Co. and another in Douglas Co.-announced on the same day. COVID-19 B.1.429 also dubbed the California variant, was discovered in Lane County through genetic sequencing by the Oregon Genomics and Cell Characterization Core Facility at the University of Oregon. Scientists worldwide continue to monitor changes in the COVID-19 virus, including changes to the spikes on the surface of the virus, Credit Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Health officials believe this viral mutation is “home grown” in the US and possibly in California or the desert southwest area. It’s been found in most states and nearly two dozen countries.

Coronavirus updates Saturday: Lane County hospitals to distribute vaccines to health care providers

Register-Guard Lane County reports 143 new COVID-19 cases Saturday Lane County reported 143 new confirmed or presumptive cases of COVID-19 Saturday, raising the countywide total to 7,664. There are 432 people considered infectious, an increase from 352 the day before. The death toll did not increase from Friday s count of 96. There are still 40 people hospitalized, the same as Friday.  The county had administered 5,574 first vaccine doses Friday, up 4.7% from Wednesday s 5,319. Lane County hospitals to distribute more vaccines Lane County hospitals McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center and PeaceHealth will be assisting community vaccination efforts, Lane County Public Health announced Friday.  The hospitals will vaccinate high-priority, frontline health care professionals.
