(Photo: Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images) Leading baby food manufacturers are selling knowingly and without warning unsafe products contaminated with dangerous levels of toxic heavy metals that can cause serious and often irreversible damage to infant brain development, according to a new congressional investigation that is generating renewed calls for greater regulation of the industry. Dangerous levels of toxic metals like arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury exist in baby foods at levels that exceed what experts and governing bodies say are permissible, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, which conducted the investigation, told CNN

Baby food products by brands including Beech-Nut, Earth's Best Organic, Happy Family Organics and Gerber were found to contain lead, cadmium and arsenic, according to the report released Thursday. Mercury was also found in products from Happy Family Organics, the only company of the four that tests mercury levels in its products, according to the report. "These results are multiples higher than allowed under existing regulations for other products," the report states. "Internal company standards permit dangerously high levels of toxic heavy metals, and documents revealed that the manufacturers have often sold foods that exceeded those levels."Congressional investigators
