USDA extends waivers for free meals through June 2022
The United States Department of Agriculture announced this week it is extending waivers through the 2021-22 academic year that allow school districts to distribute meals to children at no cost.
The extension will last until June 2022. Before this week’s announcement, the waivers would have expired in September.
The waivers, used by MCPS, allow meals to be served at no cost, in bulk and to parents without their children being present. They were first passed at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic as worries about food insecurity rose.

Mike Lardy and Samantha Hennen took the helm at Bravo Burritos starting April 1 after the business s former owners, William Bravo Bill and Helen Shay Ellenbecker, retired. Lardy and Hennen have been co-managers at Bravo for about 15 years, Lardy said. It s what we know, Hennen said. It s what we love.
Hennen said she enjoys seeing Bravo s loyal customers and the challenge of the restaurant industry.
Both Lardy and Hennen said they stayed at Bravo Burritos because of how well the former owners treated them. Lardy said it s important to him that the business is small and maintains a family-run environment.
