In an exclusive interview, Mabingue Ngom, UNFPA Regional Director for West and Central Africa, talks to New African about the Demography, Peace and Security project.
The countries of the Sahel face significant social, demographic and security challenges. Understanding the links between these issues will allow us to develop an innovative approach to provide a sustainable solution.
The Sahel is the subject of great interest from researchers due to the peculiarities of the conflicts across the region. UNFPA supports efforts to highlight the quantitative, and then explanatory, elements of these conflicts. A study carried out by the National School of Statistics and Economic Analysis (ENSAE) in Dakar, Senegal, tried to model the interrelationships between peace, security and demography in order to derive a synthetic indicator, among other objectives. And, of course, to draw evidence-based conclusions for those working in the field.
Specialists will provide analysis of the politics of the Middle East, political currents in IL, and CA relationship with the peace process.
The resource-rich Middle East and North Africa region is at a nadir following two tumultuous decades of localised crises, regional power struggles and interventions from abroad. Multiple shattered states and societies, from Libya to Syria, Yemen and Iraq, lie in their wake. Yet, one contested region, Israel and Palestine, remains central to regional peace and stability. It remains in as regressive and dangerous a state as ever, too.
This online seminar will explore the regional outlook of Israel, Palestine and the broader Middle East. It takes into consideration four years of the Trump administration siding firmly with the Netanyahu government in Israel, including support for de jure annexation of further Palestinian land.
