Hundreds of people turned out Monday in Portland to honor Martin Luther King Jr., including some who gathered for a rally and march, and others who cleaned up litter across the city.
“Today we are here to commemorate a leader that a lot of us have heard of, a lot of us have quoted, but have not taken action in the things that we hear,” Kinsey Smyth, 24, told a crowd of several hundred gathered in North Portland’s Peninsula Park.
The group then repeated King’s name.

A local substance abuse coalition has been recognized as one of the most effective in the nation.
The Livingston County Community Alliance (LCCA) was named as one of the top 10 coalitions in the country for reducing past 30-day youth substance use. The LCCA is a county-wide, anti-drug coalition that aims to unite the Livingston County community to reduce and prevent youth substance use. According to a press release from the group, they were among ten coalitions nationally that documented reductions in youth substance use across all middle and high school grade levels and all substances, including alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and prescription drugs.

Jose Rizal youth art in pandemic contest reveals Top 10 artists
These 10 artworks are vying for top prizes in the “Kabataan Laban sa Covid-19 Pandemic” youth art pandemic contest.
The Jose Rizal-inspired youth art contest “Kabataan Laban sa Covid-19 Pandemic” launched by TKP-Kilusang Kreatives, a non-profit group aimed at fostering the patriotism of the Filipino youth through art and creativity, has finally revealed its Top 10 artists.
After its launch in June coinciding with the national hero’s birth anniversary, the finalists were announced on December 30, 2020, the annual day of tribute to Jose Rizal, to whom TKP-Kilusang Kreatives finds its model of “patriotism through art” from his poetic words “the youth is the hope of the country” that the organization credits for its passion to serving the youth sector.

KANKAKEE â The Kankakee County Pledge for Life Partnership and the Juvenile Justice Council of Iroquois County each received grants for the Drug-Free Communities Support Program.
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy announced the third and final phase of grants.
The Pledge for Life Partnership was awarded a continuation grant for a second five-year cycle, while the Juvenile Justice Council of Iroquois County was awarded the five-year grant for the first time. Each grant totals $625,000 during the five-year period.
âI-KAN, working with both coalitions, is excited to direct these federal dollars to Iroquois and Kankakee counties to prevent and reduce youth substance abuse among our youth,â said I-KAN Regional Superintendent Dr. Gregg Murphy.
