Baldwin County residents feeling financial hardships from the COVID-19 outbreak may see help as soon as today.
The U.S. Treasury Emergency Rental Assistance Program is meant to address homelessness or housing instability due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This relief package includes $25 billion for emergency rental assistance. Close to $7 billion of that will go to Baldwin County.
Sherry-Lea Bloodworth Botop is Community Engagement Manager of the Baldwin County EMA. She says certain people qualify.
“Anyone making $65,000 or less who was negatively impacted by COVID economically is eligible for this,” she said. “People that are behind on their rent can apply for up to three months at a time. They are eligible for up to 15 months of total rent paid. Dating back to March 2020. So up to three months at a time in arrears. Also if you can prove a hardship moving forward, you can also apply for three months of rent.”
We all have a role to play.
That was an important theme in the keynote message New Jersey Department of Children and Families Commissioner Christine Norbut Beyer delivered Thursday to kick off NJ Spotlight News’ virtual roundtable on ACES, or adverse childhood experiences.
Studies show 40% of New Jersey children have experienced traumas or other adverse experiences like abuse, poverty, divorce and death that can have long-term, even generational, impact on their health and well-being.
Beyer outlined the development of the state’s new ACES action plan, unveiled in February, but stressed government alone can’t make it a success. “The solution can’t come from within child welfare alone. ACES can have an impact on every facet of a person’s economic well-being, long-term health, social connections, housing, likelihood for substance use and more,” she said.

There are at least 42 different languages spoken throughout the City of Utica, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise how confusing it can be to translate ever changing information concerning the pandemic. For local refugees it’s even more confusing when the information is coming from multiple sources. Shelly Callahan is the Executive Director of the Center. We’ve had to refine our messaging, and really address all those sorts of concerns that people have because our folks listen to news and news sources not only locally, but nationally, and internationally.
