Brighton council chief says schools need more support to run weekly Covid tests

A COUNCIL chief has urged the government to confirm how Covid-19 testing will be delivered in schools in the new year. From January, lateral flow tests will be deployed to all secondary schools and colleges in England to help detect asymptomatic cases, the government announced on Tuesday. All staff will be eligible for weekly rapid tests as part of the initial roll-out. Students will be eligible for daily testing for seven days if they are identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive. Under current guidelines, up to a whole school bubble has to self-isolate if one student or staff member tests positive. But from January, those in the same bubble do not need to self-isolate if they agree to be tested once a day.

More than 137,000 people vaccinated in the UK

More than 137,000 people in the UK have received the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the first week of the largest vaccination programme in British history. The government has yesterday released figures which show at least 137,897 people received their first dose of the vaccine by the end of Tuesday, December 15. 108,000 people were vaccinated in England. The figures are provisional and subject to change. Formal statistics will be published every week from next week. The majority of the vaccines have been administered to people aged 80 and over, care home workers and NHS staff through more than 70 sites across the UK.
