Bank holiday warning over risk of moorland fires

Fire engines at Marsden Moor where a major blaze has raged since Sunday Ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend, West Yorkshire residents and landowners are being warned of the risk of wildfires on local moorlands and how they can be prevented. Calderdale Council continues to work with partners at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Yorkshire Police to enforce Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) in areas of the countryside to prevent fires, said the council’s Assistant Director for Neighbourhoods, Andrew Pitts. These orders prohibit the lighting of fires, barbecues, sky lanterns or anything that causes a fire risk and failure to comply is a criminal offence.

  Parents are being urged to talk to their children about the effects of vandalism at local play facilities after a spate of incidents in recent days. Equipment in a number of play parks in Derry and Strabane were damaged at the weekend resulting in the closure of one park at Springhill in Strabane while repairs were carried out. In a statement the Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Brian Tierney urged parents to remind children that these incidents are impacting on the entire community during what is a very difficult time for everyone. This year more than ever during lockdown play parks and green areas are being used by an increasing number of families and young children.

Sign Up Vital lifebuoys have been left submerged in ice at a Dundee reservoir despite growing numbers of people risking their lives on the frozen water. People have been seen walking, cycling, skating, and throwing sticks on to the water for dogs at the 24-foot-deep Clatto Reservoir in recent weeks. To make matters worse, five lifebuoys needed in an emergency have been left inaccessible, despite repeated concerns from the local community.
