FORT WORTH, Texas Cason Abbott, 11, of Abilene, is usually the picture of an active, healthy boy a boy who loves baseball, hunting and playing with friends.
But this week, the pictures tell a much scarier story.
“The swelling,” his mother Angie Abbott said. “Right now, our main thing is making sure it doesn t get to his brain.”
Abbott spoke to WFAA Wednesday from Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, where her son is being treated for Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome, or MIS-C. It’s an illness marked by fever, gut pain, vomiting and more.
11-Year-Old in Intensive Care After Suffering From COVID-19 Syndrome
FORT WORTH, TX An Abilene family is facing a hard time as their 11-year-old son battles a rare but serious complication associated with COVID-19.
According to the Abbott family, 11-year-old Cason initially tested positive for coronavirus on November 8.
For the last 10 days, the fifth-grader has been sick and Abilene doctors were not able to determine why.
Cason s mom, Angie, said the 11-year-old has a high fever, swelling in his heart and colon, a swollen mouth, hands, feet, and a rash.
The lack of answers prompted Angie to take him to Cook Children s Medical Center.
It’s easy to look at the past year and only see the negative impacts of the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic, but 2020 has given us a lot to be thankful for too.

Young patients who are not as critically ill are treated on another floor. Not a single day is the same,” nurse Taryn Compton said. “We really roll with the punches. Lots of teamwork. Lots of moral support for each other, just with not knowing what to expect or what s next.
Davis said while children can get the virus and have bad outcomes, they are far more resilient and are impacted far less than older victims. There are children getting very ill,” Davis said. “The great news is most of them recover beautifully.
She said the virus has changed everything at the sprawling Fort Worth children’s hospital, where workers have had to adjust to constantly changing plans and procedures.
