Leaders of the Circus Arts Conservatory hope to make Sarasota a U.S. hub for circus education and are planning an expansion of its 2.2-acre property on Bahia Vista Street.
To make that possible, conservatory leaders need approval from the Sarasota County School District because the organization s arena sits on Sarasota High School property.
Conservatory leaders appeared before the School Board on May 4 to inform members of their intentions, and will return to present a master plan concept and ask for a 99-year extension to its lease.
It was a middle school drama teacher’s nightmare.
With less than an hour until Woodland Middle School’s performance of “The Little Mermaid” in North Port last Friday, the entire cast was in tears.
The students, who had been rehearsing the show for months without wearing masks for protection against COVID-19, had just learned that they would have to wear face coverings for that night’s performance.
It was the second night of the show, and Sarasota County School District officials had been informed that at opening night the actors were not wearing masks on stage, in violation of School Board policy. When drama teacher Gina Barber told the kids that they would be singing and dancing with masks on, she was soon surrounded by some very upset sea creatures.
Kari Johnson, Sarasota County School District s Teacher of the Year, is one of five statewide finalists for the Florida Teacher of the Year.
Johnson, a kindergarten teacher at Fruitville Elementary, has spent her 15-year career in Sarasota schools.
Johnson was first nominated for the district s award in November 2020. She was named the district s teacher of the year in January, which made her eligible for the state honor, finalists for which were named on Thursday.
Now she is one of five still in the running for the Florida 2022 Teacher of the Year award, which will be announced July 22 in Orlando. The winner will serve as the Florida Teacher of the Year until July 2022.
3 weeks ago Share Superintendent Brennan Asplen has been on the job for nearly a year. Now board members will evaluate his effectiveness.
No one in the Sarasota County School District is above a report card, not even the superintendent.
But just how that report card will be determined is still up for debate.
Brennan Asplen began working for the district in August 2020, and now school board members will evaluate the job he’s done to determine where improvements can be made and whether he deserves performance-based bonuses.
Most recently, the board evaluated then-Superintendent Todd Bowden on 11 criteria including leadership and culture, policy and governance, communications and community relations, curriculum and planning development, and values and ethics of leadership.
