FAO - News Article: Read-out of the bilateral meeting between FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and President of the Community of Sant Egidio Professor Marco Impagliazzo

08/04/2021 Today, 8 April 2021, the FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, and the President of the Community of Sant’Egidio, Professor Marco Impagliazzo, had a virtual meeting, to exchange on areas of interest for potential cooperation. Professor Impagliazzo started the encounter by paying tribute to the Director-General’s vision for a renewed FAO that focuses on delivery and impact. He then commended the Director-General for the holistic design and systemic approach of the Hand in Hand Initiative and noted that many school feeding programmes of Sant’Egidio follow the same approach. The President of the Community of Sant’Egidio presented some highlights of the Community’s work, including the nutritional centres to fight malnutrition of children and provide nutritious food, the schools of peace and the common garden.

Illustrated children’s book ‘Aphid Attack!’ promotes plant health 17th March 2021 However, a collaboration between one of our PhD students, Josh Joyce, and an illustration student, Lauren Harris continued independently beyond this formal finish and led to an engaging children’s book highlighting the importance of plant health. The illustrative book tells the story of Billy and his encounter with a plant scientist working to prevent wheat being attacked by aphids. As part of the International Year of Plant Health, the formal collaboration focused on topics within our Plant Health research programme. PhD student Josh was one of our researchers who got involved with the project. In February 2020 Josh spoke to second year illustration students about his research.
