Calls mount for Tokyo Olympics boss Yoshiro Mori to step down over sexist comments By Lucy Craft Questions about plans for Tokyo Olympics Tokyo  A firestorm set off by the man in charge of the Tokyo Olympics shows no signs of ebbing. Calls for organizing committee chairman Yoshiro Mori to step down are mounting, with a possible showdown set for Friday as the committee meets to deal with the crisis.  The scandal began last week, when Mori, 83, casually declared that meetings drag on when women are in attendance, because they talk too much. The damage was only compounded when he offered what was construed as a disingenuous apology and retraction the following day.

Few young Japanese want to study or work abroad The rise of inward-looking youth , with little interest in venturing outside Japan, has caused consternation among Japanese journalists, policymakers and business leaders in recent years. Only 4% of all university students study overseas, says the education ministry. Another government survey from 2019 found that just a third of young Japanese want to study abroad, compared with 66% of South Koreans and 51% of Germans. The Japanese are equally lukewarm about working overseas. A survey by Sanno University in 2017 found that 60% of young employees did not want to work in other countries, up from 36% a decade beforehand.

In the ongoing series of Fog drawings, Meiro Koizumi reproduces stills from various movies by renowned Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) Ozu was sent to China to fight in the war. According to his diary, at the beginning of the war, he was making plans to make war films once he goes back to his homeland Japan. His diary was filled with ideas of scenes that depict the daily lives of soldiers in a foreign country. But at some point during the war he stopped making such notes. As a soldier, he was the unit leader for a unit that spread chemical gas against the Chinese army. He saw and experienced the worst of the war.
