The 2020 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices said breakdown of traditional community appeared to contribute to a child’s chance of exploitation for commercial sex. The human right report said some high school-age children and homeless and jobless youth were subjected to sex trafficking. The report said reports of children exploited in organised prostitution were common in tourist centers as Nadi and Savusavu. “Increasing urbanisation, overcrowding, and extended family structures put children at risk of abuse and appeared to contribute to a child’s chance of exploitation for commercial sex.”
A few months ago, I distributed face masks to my colleagues in the European Parliament with the simple slogan ‘Speak Up for Uyghurs’ printed on the front. Members from across five different political groups wore them during the State of the European Union address given by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Along with a letter to the Commission calling for new Magnitsky powers, we, as members, had hoped that this would send a clear message to the European Commission that they had a responsibility to do more to defend the Uyghur Minority in China who are currently subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment by the Communist government.

The EU and China concluded negotiations for a Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI). The negotiations have taken more than seven years but received new impetus in 2019 when the EU put forward its new EU-China strategy.
In that strategy, the EU set out its expectation that the new investment agreement would address imbalances and asymmetries in the EU’s relations with China. In this year’s summit meetings both sides committed to concluding negotiations on the CAI before the end of 2020. However, the EU has always put substance ahead of timing.

Shanghai, China, Dec 29 (efe-epa).- China is seeking foreign capital to develop industries like 5th generation (5G) mobile networks and self-driving vehicles, according to the commerce ministry.
The ministry published on Monday night a list of sectors for overseas investment.
It covers a total of 480 sectors at the national level and another 755 specific to the central and western regions of the country, promoted to balance the economic development that has traditionally skewed towards the coastal regions.
The update to the list adds 127 new industries where foreign investment is sought. It will come into effect from Jan.27.
