THEY RE usually elusive creatures, but our camera club members have managed to catch quite a few otters in the lens over the past few months. The appearance of one of the rare creatures in the lake at Lydiard Park was a surprise for Emma Sanger-Horwell, as we reported at the weekend. But they ve been seen playing and hunting at other waterways in Wiltshire and Swindon. Currently on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature red list of threatened species, European otters are very efficient predators, eating fish, amphibians and water birds. They are equipped with webbed feet and are expert swimmers. Their young, known as kits, take to the water at just 10 weeks old.
Op-Ed: Protecting 30 percent of the ocean is easier said than done 19 May 2020

Although there is no official word, it is highly likely the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15), due to be held in Kunming this October, will be pushed back to next year, as the coronavirus epidemic has forced a number of preparatory meetings to be cancelled or delayed, stalling the already slow CBD negotiations process.
The epidemic makes the future of targets for global biodiversity – including in the ocean – even more uncertain. With economies suffering, how much money will there be for marine biodiversity? But some see opportunity. Li Shuo, senior global policy advisor with Greenpeace East Asia, says recent epidemics have almost all originated in animals, and the coronavirus exposes the possible health risks that arise when the relationship between humanity and nature falls out of balance.

Sawfish look something like hedge trimmers with fins and can reach lengths of 17 feet. To Jasmin Graham, president and chief executive of Minorities in Shark Sciences, it’s sometimes hard to believe such weird fish exist.
“They look so intimidating if you look at them from the top down,” she said. But from the bottom, “they have these cute, adorable little gray mouths that kind of look like they’re smiling.”
