She said while it was true that “people in these groups suffer discrimination”, the debate had been too often dominated by “fashion” rather than “facts”. The Equalities Minister, who is also the International Trade Secretary, said the focus on protected characteristics laid out in the 2010 Equality Act “has led to a narrowing of the equality debate that overlooks socio-economic status and geographic inequality­”.
