GREAT BEND TRIBUNE KHP reports fatal crash in Ellsworth County Wednesday Slick roads cause two more crashes Tuesday The Kansas Highway Patrol reports a fatal crash occurred Wednesday in Ellsworth County. There were also two injury crashes Tuesday in Ellsworth County, both due to slick road conditions. Around 4 p.m. Wednesday, a Freightliner semi-tractor driven by Curtis D. Birt, 63, of Shawnee, was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway into the north embankment, continuing westbound until turning on the passenger side, coming to rest 200 feet north of the roadway. Birt, who was not wearing a seat belt, died in the crash.

Salina hospital gives first COVID-19 vaccines to staff

Thursday marked a new day in the local battle against COVID-19 as the first vaccines to protect against the disease arrived and were given to health care workers at Salina Regional Health Center. The hospital received 800 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and will be giving them over five days to health care workers most at risk for exposure, such as those working in the intensive care unit, respiratory therapy and the emergency department. The first vaccine in Salina was given around 2 p.m. Thursday in a conference room at the hospital to ICU nurse Kelly Winslow, who was excited for this day to arrive.

Saline County sees 152 new COVID-19 cases, 1 more death

The Salina Journal Saline County reported an additional death due to COVID-19, in addition to 152 new cases of the disease, on Wednesday. According to Wednesday s news release, the number of cases in the county is now 3,521, with 1,545 cases being actively monitored by the Saline County Health Department, 1,930 recovered and 46 deaths from the disease. Additionally, the county said Salina Regional Health Center reported 38 currently hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Free COVID testing kits offered at drive-through event

The Salina Journal The Salina Regional Health Center is hosting a free community COVID-19 testing event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19 at COMCARE, 2090 South Ohio Street, in Salina. The screening will use saliva-based tests, which require electronic registration and spitting into a funnel. Participants do not have to be symptomatic to get tested. Do not eat, drink, smoke, brush teeth, or chew gum 30 minutes before coming to be tested. Please bring a smart phone with texting and internet capability for kit registration. All attendees must wear a face mask. There will be signage as well as staff members onsite directing traffic for the screening. Once participants have received a collection kit, they will be directed to park to complete the test using the instructions provided. A drop box will be provided for completed kits.
